A Birthmark or a Mole?

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2011

There are many reasons why someone chooses to have a mole removed. It might be for cosmetic reasons or maybe it has changed in color or size and the dermatologist wants it removed just to be safe.  There are two methods to removing a mole, either by excision which requires stitches or excision with cauterization. This is when a tool is used to burn the mole off as it seals the wound.

Laser removal is also possible but the moles that are deep are not penetrated deeply enough by the laser.  Depending on the desired outcome, your dermatologist will choose excision with or without the need for stitches. Those who live in the London area have a nearby clinic where they can find out more about mole removal London.  Many people will call any irregularity or dark spot a mole but this is not always the case.

A dermatologist will use different names but skin marks are not treated like moles are and are in a different class. For instance, a birth mark is not a mole and neither is a abnormal collection of blood vessels.  If you are unsure of what you have on your skin, see your dermatologist for an evaluation.
